Kitsap Mental Health Services (KMHS) is seeking an Inpatient Shift Supervisor to provide leadership and operational oversight within our Adult Inpatient Unit. In this role, you will supervise Behavioral Health Technicians while coordinating closely with the clinical treatment team to maintain a safe, therapeutic milieu. You will balance staff support, risk management, and daily operations to ensure consistent, highquality care for adult clients. Primary Responsibilities:

         Supervise Behavioral Health Technicians (BHTs), including training, coaching, performance evaluation, and disciplinary actions related to task completion, documentation, clinical skill use, communication, and professional conduct.

         Provide regular individual supervision sessions with BHTs and maintain confidential supervisory documentation, including performance appraisals and disciplinary records.

         Lead onboarding and orientation for newly hired BHTs; provide ongoing coaching to address performance gaps and professional development goals.

         Promote positive staff morale by responding promptly to concerns, supporting respectful communication, facilitating team building, and recognizing staff contributions.

         Conduct continuous assessments of milieu acuity and client risk; collaborate with staff to implement deescalation strategies and least restrictive interventions.

         Coordinate and participate in physical interventions when necessary, including assembling staff, directing response efforts, ensuring safety, and facilitating postincident debriefings.

         Ensure appropriate staffing levels per shift based on protocol and acuity, including arranging additional staffing as needed.

         Oversee adult inpatient admissions from intake through arrival, ensuring admission criteria, documentation, protocols, and safety precautions are met.

         Ensure therapeutic programming occurs as scheduled; collaborate with the Inpatient Manager and Director to address schedule adjustments.

         Facilitate passdown communication with nursing staff at shift change, sharing relevant clinical, safety, and operational information.

         Review treatment team notes and coordinate followup on special assignments, treatment plan directives, and unit communications.

         Approve time sheets for direct reports, monitor break compliance, and provide coverage for other supervisors as needed.

         Conduct regular chart audits for current census to ensure compliance with applicable WAC requirements.

         Model effective interventions, traumainformed care, professional boundaries, and therapeutic communication with clients and staff.

 

Minimum Qualifications:

EDUCATION: High School Diploma or GED

EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor’s degree and 2 years relevant work experience (ie: social service, mental health or customer service) OR

 

  • Associates degree and 4 years relevant work experience (ie: social service, mental health or customer service) OR

 

  • High school diploma and 6 years relevant work experience (ie: social service, mental health or customer service)

 

LICENSURE: Agency Affiliated Counselor Registration

 

Preferred Qualifications:

EDUCATION: Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology, social services, or behavioral health field.

EXPERIENCE: 1 year experience as a Team Leader or Supervisor

Relevant experience working in residential or inpatient treatment setting

 

Performance Requirements:

KNOWLEDGE:

  1. Maintain a working knowledge and skill in verbal de-escalation skills as outlined in MPAC/CPI trainings and other agency-mandated trainings
  2. Maintain knowledge of unit policies and procedures and work collaboratively with the Inpatient Director and Manager to address updates and revisions as necessary.

SKILLS:

  1. Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with other employees, clients, organizations, and the public.
  2. Must possess excellent verbal and written communication skills
  3. Proficiency in MS Word preferred.

 

ABILITIES:

  1. Demonstrated ability to work cooperatively and collaboratively as a team member.

 

Equipment Operated: Standard office equipment including computers, fax machines, copiers, printers, telephones, etc.

 

Work Environment: Frequent mobility and/or sitting required for extended periods.

 

Mental/Physical RequirementsWhile performing the duties of the job, the employee is required to stand, sit, use hands and fingers, reach with hands and arms, ascend and descend stairs, talk or listen and lift up to 50 pounds. Peripheral vision is also required for this position.
